Alchemist, Pungent Stench
Terrace Bar
BMA Issue?

Warning,
Warning! Severely biased journalist approaching! Yes,
I’ll admit that these two bands are amongst
my favourite in the world but it doesn’t matter
I can be objective…maybe. Alchemist first, how
many times have I seen this band but the main thing
is I’m not sick of them yet – not at all.
In actual fact I’m still totally amazed every
time they take the stage. I’m yet to see Alchemist
play a bad show and they sure as hell did not disappoint
on this cold and miserable evening. Songs like Wandering
and Wondering (what a gem), ‘Enhancing Enigma’
(a classic), and Purple were definite favourites.
The technical ability of this band never ceases to
amaze and the set is always rehearsed to impeccable
standards. I have to make special mention of the improvements
in the vocals over the last four or so months and
Adam did an excellent job to maintain stage presence
even with a neck injury. The whole band has progressed
dramatically and have absolutely no bounds to their
ability to be one of the best death metal bands in
the world. Pungent Stench – I’d been waiting
for weeks and I’d set the expectations at a
remarkably high standard, unlike another international
act to tour this year – I was not disappointed.
How many gigs have I been to in the last year 100
– 150 maybe? Some good, some atrocious but this
one was the best of them all in fact the best band
I have seen in my whole life. Not a single note out
of place – absolutely unbelievable! A superb
mix whether you were part of the enthusiastic pit
or checking out the merchandise at the back of the
venue, the sound was nothing short of perfect. Pungent
played tracks from all their albums including classics
like “Blood, pus and gastric juice”, “for
god your soul…for me your flesh” plus
new stuff like “Rape” which, for all you
cynical jerks trying to can this band, is actually
an anti-rape song and not what your sick minds would
have you believe. They also played ZZ Tops “Sharp
Dressed Man” for a bit of a laugh and the Bee
Gee’s “Staying Alive” slipped in
there for a moment while Martin removed his shirt
(A definite highlight!!!). Visually there was no clichéd
death metal bullshit either, the guys opting for a
more humorous attitude (much like there support band)
and leaving the image bit to those whose music is
not strong enough to carry them. Just as I expected
an excellent night of good, intelligent, fun music,
with no problems (or censorship) what so ever.
